As online interest in both presidential candidates increases going into Election Day, the number of searches for Joe Biden surpasses those for Donald Trump.
Google Trends reports that 50 percent of candidate searches are for the Democrat, with 44 percent for the Republican. Jo Jorgensen, Libertarian candidate is the subject of 5% of searches while 1% is for the Green Partyâs Howie Hawkins.
Former Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton never ranked higher than Trump in Google searches during 2016, after Trump became the Republican Partyâs nominee. Earlier, Trump led searches in 38 states on the eve of the 2016 Election Day.
Between November 2016 and that yearâs Election Day, Trump comprised for about 55% of Google searches, as reported by Google Trends.
Google notes searches indicate curiosity about a candidate and âIt should not be considered an indication of voter intent.â There was a rise between 18th October and 24th October in searches for Biden. The swing state of Pennsylvania was among the top five regions where the spike was observed.
By contrast, searches for âTrumpâ saw a sharp decline in October. Of the top five states searching the term, none are considered likely 2020 swing states by pollsters.
Google Trends data also showed that searches like âHow to voteâ spiked 1,000 percent (ten-fold) shortly before election. âWhere do I voteâ by 1,400 percent and âWhat time do polls open on Election Day?â by 700 percent.
