The Edgbaston ground in Birmingham will serve as a drive-through test centre for the National Health Service (NHS) staff to detect the novel coronavirus.

The stadium’s car park has been donated to the NHS workers by Warwickshire County Cricket as the UK government desperately tries to increase the testing capacity for the lethal virus.

NHS staff have been at the forefront by treating infected patients with several fundraising initiatives undertaken by prominent personalities to help the medical personnel.

“Warwickshire CCC has donated Edgbaston to the Department of Health and Social Care to create a drive-through COVID-19 testing station, which will be used to regularly test NHS staff,” the club stated in a tweet.

Warwickshire chief executive Neil Snowball expressed his glee at offering something to the health care workers.

“I am pleased our stadium can be utilised to support the fantastic efforts being made by all of our NHS staff in response to the coronavirus crisis,” he said.

An NHS England spokesperson gratefully welcomed the step taken by Warwickshire and hoped its ultimate purpose would be fulfilled.

“The innovative drive-through at Edgbaston Cricket Ground will ensure staff with symptoms get tested promptly so they can continue caring for patients where possible and also protect themselves, families and patients against the virus.”

The international venue is scheduled to host the second Test between England and West Indies beginning June 12 but the fate of the series hangs in uncertainty.

No decision has yet been taken on the future of England’s domestic and international season with the start of this summer’s cricket action delayed to May 28.
