Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau is unsure about when he will make the decision to ban Huawei from the country’s 5G networks.
The Conservatives filed a notion in the House of Commons, forcing Trudeau’s Liberal government to make the announcement of its decision in the coming 30 days.
Chinese telecom groups have faced bans and heightened scrutiny in recent months over fears that Beijing could use their technology to spy on foreign citizens. Beijing protests and says that they are being unfairly targeted for commercial reasons.
Huawei executive, Meng Wanzhou, is under house arrest in Canada and awaits possible extradition to the US based on fraud and conspiracy charges.
When asked at a press conference about when the 5G ban will be implemented, Trudeau said he did not want to commit to a specific date.
“We will continue to trust our security agencies and experts when it comes to making this important decision on how to protect Canadians and our businesses in an increasingly interconnected world,” he said.
“We have worked with our allies, we have consulted broadly, and I can tell you that the decision we will make will be based on the recommendations of our security agencies.”
Other countries including United States, Australia, Britain, Japan and Sweden have placed restrictions on the use of Huawei technology in their 5G networks.
The Conservatives leader Erin O’Toole told lawmakers, “When it comes to China, this government is out of step with our allies,”
He accused Huawei of years of industrial spying conducted by China.
Big Canadian mobile providers like Bell, Rogers and Telus said that they will look to other groups for deployment of their 5G networks.
