BOCA RATON/FL – USA: Experienced and veteran cricketer Nasir Charlie has been appointed head coach of the Florida Beamers for the upcoming USA Cricket Minor League tournament.
Charlie will work with a number of young promising players from the franchise and will be hoping to take them to another level when it comes to the 2021 tournament. Charlie a leg-break and googly bowler has been in around US cricket for decades and has a sound knowledge of many players whom his franchise will battle against.
Florida Beamers marquee player Zishawn Qureshi has kind words for Charlie. “I have been working with Nasir Charlie on a personal level and it has helped be a lot with my game. It tells me that he will be able to work with individuals to iron out their flaws. I know that he role will be a more strategic one as head coach but he has shown that he has vast knowledge when it comes to teaching the rudiments of the game and for this we are lucky at Florida Beamers to have him on board with us.”
The 55-year old Javed was a right-handed batsman who bowled leg break googly growing up in Lahore, Punjab, Pakistan Javed started his cricket career in his native Pakistan, playing first-class cricket for Lahore City in 1984–85, Lahore City Whites in 1984–85 and Servis Industries in 1986–87 as a bowler. Later he emigrated to the United States of America and played for his adopted country in the 1998–99 Red Stripe Bowl in Jamaica, the 2001 ICC Trophy in Canada, and the 2002 ICC Americas Championship in Argentina. Javed also played in the 2004 ICC Six Nations Challenge, which the Americans won to qualify for the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy in England. Javed competed in the second-ever One Day International played by the United States, a heavy defeat to Australia at the Rose Bowl. He later played for the United States in the 2005 ICC Trophy.
Looking ahead at the opening matches coming up on July 31 and August 1, Qureshi said: “Our team is packed with talented players, some of whom have gone on to represent the United States at the high lever. The onus is on the younger players to take a keen interest on how the senior players go about their game, so that they can feel comfortable to compete.
“We are very happy as a team going into the opening matches and Nasir Charlie has done his homework on the other teams, so there is a level of confidence there.”
