PHILIPSBURG/ST. MAARTEN: The Simpson Bay Pelicans prevailed at the end of a successful Maq Cricket59 tournament that was played on the weekend at the Caribe Lumber Ball Park in St. Maarten.

The strongest team in St. Maarten made sure that they kept the trophy on the Island, as they sent back the Dutch Quarter Eagles packed with players from Anguilla. Finishing in third place was Philipsburg Rhinos, while the Marigot Tigers ended in fourth spot.

After all the keen matches, the final was an anti-climax, as the Pelicans ran away victors by 10 wickets. Batting first, the Eagles made only 66 all out in their 10 overs and this was no pressure for the in-form Pelicans. They romped to victory by 10 wickets Mikyle Louis and skipper Kenroy David taking the win. Louis scored 33 runs from 17 balls, while David smashed 24 not out off 15 balls. The Pelicans played the tournament unbeaten winning a total of four matches. They defeated the Marigot Tigers in the semis after recording a massive 157/4 the highest score of the tournament. Batsman Sherwin Peters scored 97 not out to be the highest scorer in the tournament.

Again as at the previous tournaments here the crowds came out to take in the fast-paced action of this new format. The idea to have the first ball of the match played as ‘free hit’ caught on well with the players and of the eight matches, four times the first ball of the innings was slammed for six.

The competition was keen from the onset and fans were treated to great excitement as balls went flying all over the place. At the closing ceremony Vice-president of CCUSA, Sofian Qamar said he was very happy with the initiative and he hailed it a success. “This was a great initiative and I want to thank all that made it happen. Over the past three days we saw some great cricket and this shows that this tournament is off with a bang, or should I say in cricketing terms a six. I am very happy with what I saw here and during the weekend, we had the kids coming around to view the cricket and this is refreshing. We at CCUSA is about development and we are happy to invest in the development of the cricketers on and off the field.”

FINAL SCORES:

Dutch Quarter Eagles 66 all out (Daniel Doram 2/12) vs Simpson Bay Pelicans 67/0 (Mikyle Louis 33no, Kenroy David 24no) – Simpson Bay Pelicans won by 10 wkts.
