An official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official has requested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to cancel the 6th edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL), inorder to pave way for the Asia Cup in 2021.

An official from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official has requested the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to cancel the 6th edition of Pakistan Super League (PSL), inorder to pave way for the Asia Cup in 2021.

The PSL takes place every year in the February-March window and this year’s edition was called off just before the semi-finals stage due to the outbreak of the coronavirus. The PCB is looking to complete the knockout stages sometime later this year.

While speaking to Indo-Asian News Service (IANS), the BCCI official said that the September or October window this year for Asia Cup doesn’t suit the Indian board.

“Asia Cup will be a struggle this year. Going by the statement of the Chief Executive of the PCB, the window that suits them doesn’t suit India. Maybe they can postpone PSL next year if BCCI is able to open up a window during that period. Otherwise conducting the Asia Cup doesn’t seem too practical as these are challenging times,” said the official.

Pakistan were to originally host this year’s Asia Cup, but the PCB seems to have struck a deal with Sri Lanka cricket in terms of the hosting rights. According to sources, Sri Lanka will get to host this year’s Asia Cup and will grant Pakistan the right to host the next edition of the mega-event.

PCB CEO Wasim Khan in a recent interview said that the Asia Cup will happen this year as planned.

“The Asia Cup will go ahead. The Pakistan team returns from England on 2nd September so we can have the tournament in September or October. There are some things which will only get clear in the due course of time. We are hopeful of having the Asia Cup because Sri Lanka has not had too many cases of the coronavirus. If they can’t do it, then the UAE is also ready,” Khan had said.
